THE EMPEROR REALLY HAS GOT NO CLOTHES
From David Morley
Just to remind everyone of the background, the matter is thus :
In the 1980's, a few climate scientists in the USA started to suspect that there was evidence of a slow
warming of the atmosphere and they tentatively linked this to a small but very
well documented increase in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. This
was driven into world wide focus by papers by Mann and others which showed a
sharp rise in global temperatures towards the end of the twentieth century, the
so-called "Hockey Stick".
At this point it was a reasonable scientific
hypothesis that there might be slow global warming driven by the increase in the
carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. It was a perfectly good idea, which
could be evaluated and assessed through the normal scientific process.
The
assessment process, however, resulted in the calculations leading to Mann's
Hockey Stick being discredited. It was soon dropped from the portfolios of all
but the most rabid proponents of the Global Warming/Carbon Dioxide hypothesis.
Once the Hockey Stick was discredited, the whole hypothesis became very weak.
You can't have a Global Warming Hypothesis if you are not even sure that the
atmosphere is warming.
What we are now being told by the Global Warming advocates
is that warming has seemingly stopped, but that on the basis of computer models
we may expect it to resume in a few years time.
Well, science is based on data. The old adage is "Theory guides, but experiment decides". There's no reason to abandon this
hallowed advice
Unfortunately, while the climate
scientists were trying to weigh up the reality of the data, the debate became
heavily politicised, various groups using the idea to power forward a variety of
agenda by using the fear factor.
At the moment new scientific papers which
question the hypothesis of carbon dioxide driven warming are refused publication
or are delayed and research grants are made difficult to get. In effect the
livelihood of scientists is being threatened unless they toe the line.
